Guide for electrical design engineers

Leonardo ENERGY has launched a new publication for electrical design engineers called “Guide for electrical design engineers”. Each chapter will study an electrical design case and present its methodical, step-by-step calculation method.

Chapter 1 : Designing an Uninterruptible Power Supply

A company specialized in uninterruptible power supply systems developed and manufactured in 2006 a system comprising a 400kVA UPS unit. The system was installed in a production facility manufacturing food packaging equipment and foil, located in northern Poland.

Chapter 2 : Centralised Reactive Power Compensation

In this guide, you will learn how to determine the maximum and minimum compensator power in order to compensate reactive power in case of harmonic pollution

Chapter 3: permissible level of voltage fluctuations for a motor

In this guide, a design engineer has to advise his industrial customer who plans to connect a new induction motor to the power supply system. Using the permissible level of voltage fluctuations, his methodology is described.

Chapter 4 : voltage change during drive start

In this guide, a design engineer works on a converter drive design and determines the voltage change coefficient during the drive start, compares it to permissible levels and suggests solutions to have it satisfying the limit

Chapter 5 : Mitigation of voltage unbalance

When the limit values of unbalance factor, specified in standards are exceeded, the use of symmetrizatin systems is required. A symmetrizator should not cause significant active power losses during operation, it implies that the symmetrization process shall be carried out by means of reactive elements (LC) or using active methods (power electronic systems). In this step by step guide, you will learn how to solve unbalance issues.

Chapter 6 : static FC/TCR compensator

Industrial facilities are a source of major disturbance to power systems due to more and more large power loads being installed that, apart from their good functional properties, are characterised by negative impact on the quality of power.

Chapter 7: overload capacity of power transformers

This guide presents a methodology based on standard PN-IEC 60354 to check overloading capacity of transformers.

Chapter 8: emergency & UPS for Buildings – Sizing the source power

Prior to designing a power supply system for a building or other structure, a designer carries out a detailed analysis concerning the requirements for reliability of power supply of loads to be installed in the designed building or facility.

Chapter 9 : measuring earth resistance and continuity testing

Earth resistance is a key parameter in determining the efficiency of earthing systems.
